Prior to Cavendish dominating the production of bananas around the world, Gros Michel banana was the preferred variety. A lethal fungal disease called Panama disease (Race 1) destroyed most Gros Michel plantations, and Cavendish bananas were cultivated on a large scale as a substitute.
